Overview

Our flight simulator is an FAA-approved Advanced Aviation Training Device (AATD) — the higher tier of training device, authorized by the FAA under a Letter of Authorization (AC 61-136). It's modeled on the Diamond DA40 and DA42 with the Garmin G1000 glass cockpit, so the procedures, avionics, and instrument scan transfer directly to the airplane you actually fly.

Because it's an AATD, time in the device is loggable toward your ratings and currency when flown with an authorized instructor — real credit, not just practice. It's the most cost-effective way to drill instrument approaches, holds, partial panel, and emergencies, train on weather days, and stay sharp between lessons — all at $130/hr.

What You Can Log

Use Allowance Notes
Instrument Rating Up to 20 hrs Toward the 40 hrs instrument time, with a CFII
Commercial A portion of required time Within the FTD/ATD allowance
IFR Currency (§61.57) Approaches, holds, tracking Maintain instrument recency
Instrument Proficiency Check IPC may be completed With an authorized instructor
Private Pilot Up to 2.5 hrs Toward the certificate

Loggable hours are set by the device's FAA Letter of Authorization and must be flown with an authorized instructor. Figures shown are standard AATD allowances — confirm exact specifics with your instructor.

What You'll Practice

  • Precision and non-precision approaches (ILS, RNAV/LPV, VOR, LOC)
  • Holding patterns, course intercepts, and missed approaches
  • Partial-panel flying and unusual-attitude recovery
  • Garmin G1000 / GFC 700 autopilot and flight-director operations
  • IFR cross-country planning and ATC communications
  • Emergency and abnormal procedures
  • Instrument scan development and proficiency
  • Checkride and IPC preparation

Who It's For

Instrument Students

Log instrument time toward your rating and drill approaches before you fly them in the airplane.

Staying Current

Knock out approaches, holds, and tracking to maintain IFR currency under §61.57.

IPC & Proficiency

Complete an Instrument Proficiency Check or knock the rust off after time away from flying.

Weather Days

Phoenix heat or low ceilings shouldn't stop training — keep your schedule on the ground.

Cost-Conscious Pilots

Practice the expensive, repetitive procedures at $130/hr instead of full aircraft rate.

Transition & Scenarios

Rehearse complex scenarios, emergencies, and new avionics safely and repeatably.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I log the time toward my rating?

Yes, when flown with an authorized instructor. AATD time counts toward the instrument rating and instrument currency per the device's FAA Letter of Authorization.

What aircraft is it modeled on?

The Diamond DA40 and DA42 with the Garmin G1000 glass cockpit — the same platforms you train in, so the skills transfer directly.

Do I need to be a Flight Stars student?

No. The simulator is open to instrument students, rated pilots maintaining currency, and pilots prepping for an IPC or checkride.
